So i was thinking of being a native american indian girl for halloween this year but i wasn't sure how to do it. I don't really like the store costumes for it. I want to do it simple and hopefully cheap so I was wondering what you think i should buy/wear to make it a cute nat amer indian girl costume. I'm a freshman in high school so i don't want anything slutty so don't be gross please. Thanks :) To the first person that answered: I wasn't trying to be racist...I'm Native american too (Cherokee). I'm not making fun of them. Wearing the "ghetto costume" like you suggested would be. And they have costumes for it at Party city, so don't blame me, I just thought it'd be cute..sorry if i offended Ok now you're offending. I am Cherokee.. I used to get letters from my school saying I can get free lunch programs (I don't need them though) because my records show that i AM cherokee. Don't get mad at me just because you're angry about what happened in the 1800's or whatever. It's over and done with and people dont treat native americans badly like they treat other races and cultures badly.

A I actually did this for this past Halloween. We just went to a used clothing store and find either a plain beige dress or long skirt that you could make into a strapless dress, or find beige capris and a beige crop top or something...I know sounds bland for now.... Take it home and trip everything to the lenghts you need it...don't worry about hemming because it is not supposed to look perfect. If you have the time you can sew colourful beads (can pick them up at a dollar store) around the edges or in interesting patterns (search the web for suggestions on native bead work). If you are going with Disney's version get/make a thick blue necklace and keep your hair down and straight...other versions have the hair in different kinds of braids (often just two, one down each side). You may also choose to kind of go the Tigerlily (from Peter Pan) route and have a headband with a feather in it. Moccasins are a great touch too but they can be expensive. Oh, and if you can do a henna type arm band (see Disney's version). And stay away from the make-up or at least make it look like you did.

A I don't think you should be offended by that...no offense is meant. It is probably an honor that out of everything they could have dressed as they chose to be American Indians. NOT Batman, not Superman, not Harry Potter, not a thousand other characters but American Indians. Kids usually dress up as someone they admire and like. I think that means your people have come a long way in eliminating racism. Years ago, everyone would have dressed as a cowboy, NOT an Indian. I think you should be honored. By the way, my favorite film is BILLY JACK. If you haven't watched it, I suggest you do...and watch the rest of the series as well.
