- What in this response is a violation of community guidelines?
I received an email stating my answer was deleted because it violates the community guidelines. I am seriously interested in finding out what guideline was violated and how. I post this here because it was from this section that it was deleted. Yahoo said "If you feel this content was removed in error, please read the Community Guidelines and make sure that this content: 1. respects the question-answer format and is not chatty or personal communication; 2. does not contain non-relevant links to external sites or other questions and does not promote your own blog or website; 3. is respectful to other people and does not offend other community members. If you still believe this content has been removed in error, please contact Customer Care and tell us why." Exactly what was violated and how? ======= Question: If you could change the American into whatever you want what would you change it to? Deleted Answer: Think you meant the United States. America is a continent not a country. America does not end at the United Statesian borders, it goes on for thousands of miles north and south. == @ GrandTheft If America isn't a continent what does the name of our nation "the United States of America" mean if not a union of states in the American continent? Ok... so what are all those references to "America" for about 400 years before the United States became a nation? What did they mean then? ===== @ getitright Kudos for an intelligent argument! That said, it is long on sentiment and short on facts. The name America comes from the Carib word for the mountains in Central America, when Columbus asked them (the local Indians in the Caribbean where the place gets is name from -and they weren't "Indians either") "were did the gold came from?" they said "Americ" the Spaniards as is always the case made the word theirs and added an "A" so that it would have a Spanish pronunciation, and so, that land became "America" in the common lore. It was not until over fifty years later that a German cartologist ignorant of this fact assumed that the name for America had been because of "Amerigo Vespucci" a cartographer on the Columbus expeditions, that assumption was so wrong in so many ways I'm not even going to tackle that, naming new lands with the first name was reserved for royalty i/e Louisiana, Victoria etc. if for the discovery it would've been the surname of the captain "Columbus" and this continent would've been "Columbia" etc. "We were the first ones to build a country in the New World, and we were the first ones to call ourselves "Americans"." Couldn't possibly be more incorrect, the Spaniards had and still have records about those Spaniards born in America, the "Americans" as early as the 1530's, later all the colonial powers followed suit. "Every other place in the New World was still a colony and they considered themselves "Spanish" or "French" etc., therefore we have claim to "American" to describe our nationality and America our land." This much is true, the US was the first American nation to claim (and win) it's independence from European colonial powers. However you are way wrong when you say that the rest considered themselves "Spanish", "French" etc. Where do you think that the term "Americana" comes from? US history? How do you think that a SPANISH word made it's way into our lingo to mean the United States? :-) the Spaniards used the term "Tradicion Americana" (American tradition) to identify traditions that were American born vs that of the old world in Europe. After the US - Mexican war the term "Americana" to distinguish our costumes from the European ones made it into the US lingo. Naturally United Statesians assumed that "Americana" meant "United Statesian" not "American" and that nonsensical approach continues even today as exemplified by you here. Now, as for the Americans considering themselves "Spaniards" or "French" that was true but only if you were part of nobility, the average folk was not afforded any special privileges and did not considered himself something he was not. "America is not a continent." Why do you think the Olympic flag has FIVE rings? One for each continent competing. Why do you think we have the Organization of American States? Why do you think we say "Columbus discovered America"? Do you think he discovered the US? I could go on but you get the point. On your last point you are correct, Europe and Asia are technically one continent. However, the continents were defined centuries before we had this level of knowledge and so we have America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and Antarctica. The last one uninhabit
A There are three things that are violations, but people do them all the time. First, your answer could be considered insulting. Now I am not saying that it would have insulted me, but some people do not like to be corrected. Second, you chatted within your post by replying not only the question asked, but to answers left by other posters. Third, you never actually answered the question that was posted. All these things can get a post deleted. Do I agree with the rules? No, but I won't hold my tongue for anyone and that includes Yahoo moderators, so I post with understanding that some of my answers will get deleted and then when it happens, I don't get too excited.
